A breathtaking bike journey to the darkest places on earth
The Darkest Sky is a 4,500 km bike journey from October 2026 to February 2027, in search of the last places on the planet where Earth and sky still meet in their most authentic form.
It is a journey to observe what we are losing: the darkness of the night, increasingly threatened by light pollution, and the silence of the sky, now crisscrossed by a growing number of artificial objects. In fact, massive satellite constellations are transforming the night sky, introducing new moving lights into our field of vision that, at first glance, may look like stars, but are not.
This film takes us to places where the night sky is still dark, to rediscover an ancient and universal heritage that belongs to all of humanity. On a 4,500-kilometer bike ride from the Atacama Desert in Chile, recognized as an “International Dark Sky Sanctuary”, to Patagonia, astrophysicist Laurane Fréour and video-maker Lorenzo Pengue will travel through some of the last places on Earth where light pollution is still virtually nonexistent. There, the sky reveals itself once again in all its immensity: deep, unspoiled, illuminated only by starlight. The stars are visible as our ancestors have seen them for millennia. A sky that has accompanied humanity throughout its history and that today, especially in cities, has become increasingly difficult to experience. The journey presents significant challenges: cycling through the world’s highest arid desert to the edge of the Earth amid rapidly changing, extreme weather conditions. Along the way, they will visit various observatories and meet local communities committed to preserving their night skies. They will ask astronomers and astrophotographers to show them the beauty the sky still has to offer.
It is through these places and these encounters that Laurane and Lorenzo will seek to rediscover the deep connection that has always bound humanity to the sky. Gathered around campfires under the starry sky, they will look up and let that vastness bring forth questions, emotions, and a profound sense of connection to something greater than ourselves
About us

Director: Laurane Fréour
Born in Nantes, France, Laurane Fréour grew up on Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean, where three of her passions first took root: astronomy, hiking, and surfing. At the age of eight, she observed Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s Great Red Spot for the first time from the Mâques Observatory. It was then that she knew she wanted to study astronomy. Today, Laurane is an astrophysicist, engineer, and environmental activist, and a member of the steering committee of the grassroots movement Astronomers for Planet Earth. Having stargazed since childhood, she has witnessed the progressive disappearance of the night sky. Through The Darkest Sky, she wants to share the beauty and wonder of a pristine night sky, advocate for its protection, and inspire a deeper reconnection with nature and our cosmic surroundings
